You're not alone if you have trouble backing up a trailer that's connected to your vehicle. The length of most trailers makes determining how close you are to objects difficult when relying on just your rear or side-view mirrors, or when making changes to your steering with verbal feedback from another person outside the vehicle. While Rostra offers a number of harness options for adding up to four cameras to your trailer for easier highway driving, and connecting those cameras to a 7-inch or 9-inch monitor, having the video displayed on the factory in-dash monitor your truck came equipped with when shifted into reverse provides the ultimate seamless towing accessory.
Before
With the trailer disconnected from the truck, the on-screen video comes from the OE camera in the tailgate handle.

After
With the trailer hitched to the truck, the on-screen video comes from the camera on the back of the trailer.

Rostra's trailering camera systems are plug-and-play and display video from a camera on the back of your trailer on the in-dash monitor when your truck is in reverse. Rostra's kits include a custom t-harness that plugs into the factory backup camera wiring underneath your truck for a quick and easy installation. In-line with this t-harness is Rostra's camera switcher which can automatically determine when a trailer is hitched to the truck, and when it's not, to switch back and forth between displaying video from your factory tailgate handle camera and the camera on the back of the trailer.
So, whether you operate an open air carry-on trailer, an enclosed trailer, a livestock trailer, or any of the hundreds of other trailering options on the market, Rostra has the equipment to make maneuvering those trailers easier than ever. Email us today for custom solutions!
The components included in Rostra's trailer camera system include our universal hinge-mount CMOS color camera with built-in infrared LED array for low light visibility (night vision), a 10-meter extension harness for the camera (extensions available for longer trailers), the automatic camera switcher, interface t-harness that connects to the factory wiring, weatherproof connectors that mount to both the truck and the trailer, a 2.5-meter coil cable to connect the camera on the truck to the wiring on the truck, and under-bumper brackets if needed.
